DIY balloon magic

Science Week has been and gone, but that doesn’t mean the fun and the learning has to end! We found a fun and educational experiment our children at Kids Academy Preschool took part in last week that we think would be loads of fun to try at home.

“Last week the Pixies and Munchkins participated in a balloon inflating experiment,” says Centre Manager Lauren White.

“They all helped place vinegar into a bottle along with some food colouring. Then some bi-carb soda was placed into a coloured balloon and that balloon was placed over the top of the bottle.”

“Once the bi-carb soda hit the vinegar it started to expand, making the balloon self inflate.”

Activities like these help children to understand science with a child-lead play-based approach bringing smiles and learning all round. Our centres focus on these types of learning activities due to their strong connection to our Healthy Minds Program.

A strong focus on STEM (science, technology, english and math) basics are important to introduce to children, particularly in our School Readiness Programs. Foundational learning in these areas will aid in children’s transition to school life.

So how can you bundle this up and take it home with you?

What you’ll need:

  • Balloons

  • Empty plastic bottles

  • Vinegar

  • Bi-carb soda

  • Funnel

  • Food dye (optional)

Method:

  1. Use a funnel to add 1/3 cup baking soda to the inside of a balloon.

  2. Fill a plastic bottle with approximately 1 cup vinegar.

  3. Attach the balloon to the mouth of the plastic bottle, then lift the balloon upright so the baking soda falls and causes the reaction.

  4. Watch the balloon expand!

Thank you for the fun activity idea Lauren, Centre Manager for Kids Academy Preschool. To find out what fun and educational activities are happening at your local centre call 1800 CHILDCARE today!
